Downtown loading needs a space that fits the whole job
PBOT manages the Downtown parking district, which also includes the Pearl District and South Waterfront. Before scheduling, identify the exact block face and building entrance where loading is possible. A space across an intersection or around the building can create a much longer carry than the address suggests.
City rules and moving advice are different. PBOT says signed commercial truck loading zones are for loading and unloading, with a 30 minute limit. That is not an all day moving reservation. Its temporary street use program can reserve parking for a move, and currently advises allowing 5 to 7 business days for processing and sign requirements. Check the current instructions and confirm who will arrange the permit.
As a practical step, photograph the posted signs and the proposed truck position. Show driveways, corners and the walking route to the entrance. A loading plan must work for the vehicle and the expected work time, rather than rely on an empty space remaining available.
An elevator reservation is only part of an apartment move
South Waterfront planning documents describe a district with residential towers and transit connections. For a move there, in Downtown or in the Pearl, ask management for the actual moving entrance, loading location and permitted hours. An elevator reservation is a building arrangement, separate from any city curb permit; there is no single move window that applies to every Portland building.
Trace the whole trip from the unit door through corridors, elevator and lobby to the truck. Report whether a second elevator, garage level, ramp or locked service door is involved. A long walk after the elevator can require many repeated cart trips, while a shared elevator can add waiting between loads.
Request the elevator door and cab dimensions for bulky furniture, plus instructions for pads, floor protection and access keys. Coordinate the available window with the crew before finalizing it. Furniture that does not fit an elevator needs review before moving day, not an assumption that the stairs will work.
For houses, count the handling between rooms and curb
A Portland house move needs more detail than a bedroom count. List furniture in the attic, basement, garage and any separate unit. For each large piece, identify the doors, stair turns and exterior steps on its way out, then do the same for the destination room.
If the truck cannot use the driveway, measure or estimate the outdoor carrying distance from a legal street position. A sloping walk, narrow gate or wet exterior stair can change how items are handled. Photos let the crew plan protection and equipment around the real surfaces and turns without guessing from the age or style of the house.
- Show the narrowest opening and tightest turn for your largest item.
- Separate belongings that need packing or furniture disassembly from items ready to load.
- Tell us where the truck can stand and where its ramp would reach.
Match the route and address to the delivery appointment
Use the full directional address at both ends. Portland established the South Portland address area in 2020, changing affected addresses from SW to S. Check the current address supplied by the building rather than copying an old lease, delivery note or map listing.
Give any reserved delivery window the same attention as pickup access. For a move across the Willamette or Columbia, travel and unloading must fit that window together. Review current road conditions near moving day; a short distance on a map cannot promise an arrival time or a finished move.
Choose the service that fits your move
If you have a rental truck or other transportation arranged, labor only provides the crew to help load or unload. Two movers cost $140 per hour with a two hour minimum, a $280 minimum service charge.
For a move with a truck included, two movers cost $160 per hour with a three hour minimum, a $480 minimum service charge. Packing and unpacking can be added; that work uses billable time and applicable materials are additional. Estimated hours are not a guaranteed total.
Questions about moving in Portland
Can a Downtown truck loading zone cover my entire apartment move?
Do not assume it will. PBOT describes commercial truck loading zones as limited to 30 minutes during their posted operation. For a longer job, review the city parking reservation process and any approved private loading option. Confirm the plan before relying on that space.
What does the elevator to truck walk include?
Include every corridor, lobby, service passage, garage ramp and outdoor stretch after leaving the elevator. Tell us about locked doors and additional level changes. A unit close to an elevator can still be far from the truck, and that distance repeats throughout the move.
Who sets a Portland apartment building’s moving hours?
Ask the property manager or association for that building’s instructions. Share the reservation, access and protection requirements with IronAtlas so they can be coordinated with the crew. Building permission does not reserve public curb space.
What should I send for a house to apartment move?
Send both inventories and access routes, including stairs at the house and the full building route at delivery. Add the destination’s available elevator window and dimensions for oversized furniture. Loading, travel, elevator trips and final room placement all need room in the plan.
